With the “Ausgezeichtes-Engagement”-seal our advisory committee rewards social projects, that excel in their work with volunteers. Doing so, their important work does not only serve our society. They also support other people to shape the way we live together, collectively, passionately and goal-oriented! One of those projects is the Rise Foundation e.V. We interviewed them and asked what it takes to make an excellent volunteering project. This way we want to show you why volunteering at Rise Foundation is so much fun!
Tell us about your organization. What do you do? How many volunteers are involved with you? What can one do as a volunteer with you?
About Rise Foundation:
Rise Foundation e.V., a Berlin-based charity, founded in June 2018 that helps the homeless people through regular outreach programs providing food, sanitary items and clothes to those who need it. Rise Foundation e.V. does this whilst communicating warmly and compassionately with these individuals and providing key information about local shelters.
We believe that human connection is one of the most important aspects of our society. We spend time listening to the stories that the homeless people want to tell. Making them feel like a part of society, sharing a meal and respecting them as the beautiful human they are.
We engage about 50-70 volunteers every month with our biweekly distribution/outreach events, cooking and packaging the food, preparing hygiene and medical kits, getting volunteers involved in awareness projects or preparations for future projects or different work areas such as marketing, fundraising, event management, social media or content management for the organisation.
Why should volunteering interest everyone?
We started this non-profit organisation because we feel responsible for society, we live in. We grow as a society together. If there are issues to be sorted or looked after in society, we should not always rely on the government to make the situation better. We should take responsibilities for the betterment of our society.
In the words of Mother Teresa, “We feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop”.
What are your next projects?
We are currently focused on sustaining the outreach events that we already have been doing for 2 years. Additionally, we are launching another project soon which will make beverages (tea/coffee in winter and water in summer) easily accessible to the people living on the streets. Also, we are launching a few projects to increase awareness about homelessness and bringing the stories of the individuals, organising a few events to bring the people living on the streets into a common and safe place and have social evenings such as board games evening or a cinema night.
What is the key to good communication with volunteers?
Transparency and expectations about the work that volunteers are involved with. Clear instructions and a good thorough briefing about the volunteer work makes it easier for everyone.
